Playing AoC II as Civ4

Question

Hello,

Before delving deeper into the game, I wanted to ask if it's possible to play this wonderful game in a way similar to the Civilization series, while following the mechanics of AoC II?

Specifically, I'm interested in starting a game on the largest world map with 4269 provinces, around 4000 BC. I'd like to place all the civilizations in their historical locations, each having only one territory, and play it out in that manner, expanding and progressing through the ages up to 2000 AD or beyond, together with all the civilizations.

I've seen mods that allow the game to start around 4000 BC, but I'm inquiring about the general gameplay in this context.

Thank you.

Yes, it is absolutely possible to simulate this.

You can create a new scenario and manually place one province civilizations and set the time to 4000 BC or you can download a scenario.

If you want to prolong your game, make all civilizations tribal nations, so they have to research enough technology points before they can have an actual government (Tribal societies have loads of nerfs and can´t conquer anything, only colonize no matter what. Tribal Nations moving into different territories will just result in migration i. E. you lose your home province)

Make sure to enable Neutral = Colonization, so every unclaimed province has to be colonized. If you don´t do this, government nations will conquer the world instantly and tribal nations will move around the world until the end of times without getting anything done (AI tries to conquer but ends up migrating instead) You will need a specific amount of Gold for colonization and research and build economy and your country to get Gold, Armies and really everything.

Keep in mind your game might run for a while, the AI takes it´s time getting a nation running and colonizing and tends to not play in the most efficient manner when confronted with such a scenario as it prefers playing full bordering countries with government, it´s not really a master at economy and population etc. and all increased AI skill level does is make them more aggressive and AI pulling more armies out of nowhere not manage their country better. But all in all it is possible to do so, your customization options are endless in this game. You can even create civilizations ingame

Wow, thanks for the detailed answer!
I really appreciate it!

When I tried, I was stuck as the game gives the option to start at 4000 BC, but also ends at 1AD or so.
I still haven't been able to make the game last from 4000BC to 2000AD, like a Civilization game.
I went through most of the mods, couldn't find a mod that does that, neither 🫤

That is a shame. Unfortunately I was not aware of the fact that the game ends as soon as BC turns to AD. That seems to be a bug on the games end. Kinda like Y2K.

I don´t believe there is a mod that fixes this due to the majority of mods being focused either on map (expansion) or modern era historical gameplay. I´ve heard of a mod that focuses on the BC era (although I believe it was barely before the birth of Jesus) Here is the video of what I´m talking about. Keep in mind I never played the mod, but I´m trying my best to get you somewhere. The video is 2 years old so the mod is either released or dead.

The best thing, although not the most practical thing I can recommend is to set your starting date to 0/1 AD. The game will definetly run until 5000 AD (which gives you 1000 more years guaranteed compared to starting at 4000 BC). Year 5000 AD is the maximum you set the start date at, as for gameplay I don´t know what happens when you go past 5000 as I have never done it, it´s quite possible the same thing could occur that the game just ends, but as I said you will get a millenium on top

Keep in mind nations with governments in such as scenario will still have the same ideologies discovered as in our timeline, as in Nations will be able to become socialist in the 1800s, become fascist in the 1900s and so on.

You can also turn down game speed to minimum. The least amount of time will pass per turn

    • Campaign: Small Scenarios
In this topic, share your ideas for Campaign scenarios.

These scenarios focus on a small part of the map, with the rest designated as wasteland.

For example, a scenario of the Reconquista in 1054, where gameplay takes place only on the Iberian Peninsula.

What are your ideas for small historical scenarios?

    • Events - Common events for every civilization in the game
      Hi,
in this topic, I am interested in your ideas for events that can happen for every Civilization in the game.
I'm also interested in Missions for every Civilization.

Here is some example, have more than 10k army, have more than 5000 gold, build 10 buildings, recruit an Advisor, increase tax efficiency 20 times, be largest  producer of some resource in the world, unlock 5 Civilization legacies etc.

    • Land units - Ideas AoH3
AoH3 will have different types of land units.

In this topic we will write ideas for new land units.

So the AoH 3 will have new battle system.

Representation of the battlefield in the game.

Land units will be grouped into 3 types. Each unit will have a different recruitment cost, attack, defense, movement speed and upkeep.

Groups determine the placement of units on the battlefield.

Each unit can be unlocked by researching technology and then upgraded.

Here is the current list of units with upgrades:

      First line:

Warrior -> Light Footmen -> Heavy Infantry -> Infantry -> Line Infantry -> Modern Infantry

Hoplites -> Spearmen -> Pikeman -> Elite Pikeman -> Musketeer -> Riflemen -> Mechanized Infantry -> Modern Mechanized Infantry

      First line side:

Horseman -> Elite Horseman -> Cavalry -> Tank -> Modern Tank

      Second line:

Archer -> Bowmen -> Crossbowman -> Elite Crossbowman

Canon -> Field Cannon -> Artillery -> Modern Artillery

Early Airplane -> Airplane -> Modern Airplane

This is a very early version, so maybe something should be changed?

Or maybe an idea for a new type of unit with upgrades? I'm waiting for your suggestions.
