Changes to Vassals and small change to Alliances and Rebellions

Recommended Posts

Hello! I hope you read this, Łukasz Jakowski. Probably my (and other's) favourite feature of AOH2 is vassals. It has really cool roleplay potential, and It's good to see it will be in Age of History 3, but I'll suggest some things. I'll sort them based by how much effort it would take to code them (for each chapter).

Vassals
1. Different factors for vassal liberty desire

I see that in AOH2, a vassal's liberty desire will just get higher even if they are only 1 province bigger, but to me this doesn't make sense. It's not accurate at all, if it should be based on anything it should probably be based in economy and/or population, but definitely not on province count. If this is resolved, we could have autonomous colonies, as an example if Portugal colonizes Brazil, but Brazil is much bigger than Portugal, it will still remain its vassal because Portugal has a higher economy compared to Brazil at time of colonization.
a. Maximum taxes before the vassal's liberty desire increases should be higher
By this I mean that to me it doesn't make sense that with even as little as 15% taxes a really weak vassal can decide to declare war to a really strong country. I think taxes may be set, as an example, to 30% maximum in a situation in which the liege is twice as strong as its vassal. In a situation in which there is a higher disparity, so a really weak vassal but a real strong liege (example: USA as liege and Burundi as vassal), taxes could be as high as 70%.
b. Vassals found alliances to overthrow liege
This is optional to point 1. If relations with vassals' liege are sufficiently low, vassals with an economy/population lower than their Liege's may still try to gain independence by fighting togheter agains their liege.
2. Vassals laws
This would require more effort but I think that it would maybe be worth it. Anyways, a liege can choose laws for its vassals, as an example deciding to allow or not allow vassals to declare war to foreign countries or other vassals with the same liege.
a. Different vassal laws unique to a vassal
This is even harder to code but maybe it could be possible to make each vassal have its own vassal law, kind of like the different taxes in AOH2.
a. Integration to country
This is optional to point 2. One of these laws could be a scale that gets higher the more influence a liege has on its vassal. In more modern times, a vassal may be integrated in its country, seeing no technological restrictions, whenver that scale reaches its maximum.
Other mechanics
3. Influence Mechanic
This mechanic would entail, expecially in more modern scenarios, a level of influence in another country. This could be done by, for example, helping a country in some situations. Let's imagine that Country A is in war with a stronger opponent, Country B: Country A would obviously lose alone, but if Country C, which is stronger than Country B, helps Country A, Country C would gain influence in Country A. This could be implemented in an interface similar to the trade interface, so that you input "help country in war", or other ways to get influence, and the game will tell, and give you, the respective influence.
4. Alliance changes
I see that every time a single province of a country is occupied, the whole alliance flocks against that country. I think this should be removed, making it so that only if an important part of the country is taken then it will call allies. Also, a country in an alliance will always never declare war alone, but this doesn't make sense, coalitions should happen way less and only against countries stronger than the attacker.
Also I think there should be different alliance levels, so that if an alliance has low alliance level its members are less likely to attack togheter and if an alliance level is to the maximum nearly all wars will be fought togheter. Changing level should be hard, but when creating an alliance it could be set nearly wherever you want.
5. Civil war changes
Here I just want to say that supporting rebels should be much more powerful and that rebels should be playable even if you didn't start out as them.
6. Fixing bugs
Some bugs such as "offer vassalage" should be fixed.
